We spend the weekend in the beautiful hinterland. We stayed in the cozy little alternative town of Mullumbimby. It is surrounded by hills and mountains and we went for a few hikes in the area.
The Hinterland of Byron is fairly hilly – one might even say mountainous. And there are many hikes through dense rain forrests; often featuring spectacular view; sometimes all the way to the ocean overlooking Byron Bay itself. A great way to spend a weekend.
We didn’t spend too much time in Mullumbimby itself, but it has a bit of a reputation for being a hub for alternatives of all kinds. The city has a great mix of small, independent shops and many curious figures walking around. It reminded me a lot of Kreuzberg in its bests days…
However, with the currently popular misconceptions around Covid – especially in alternative circles – the town left a bit of a mixed impression on us. There were obviously many good people, trying to do the right thing. But seeing shops selling healing crystals, claiming to be an essential business; many people obviously ignoring the mask rules, and some shops even putting up signs that they don’t require masks from their customers (which is currently a legal requirement!) left us with a bit of a bad feeling…
